"A forest stand of camu-camu is worth twice the amount to be gained from cutting down the forest and replacing it with cattle." Mark Plotkin, an ethnobiologist, spoke quite forwardly about the importance of camu-camu trees. Unfortunately, while he is right about the benefits that could be taken from a forest of camu-camu, it isn't the same case with farmers throughout the country. This can most likely be attributed, at least in part, to the lack of knowledge of what a camu-camu is and what it can do for the human body.

Knowledge of something normally starts with its origins; it's helpful to know what you're eating and where it came from. Camu-camu fruit grows indigenously in the swampy, flooded areas of the Amazon forest. The trees themselves grow around seven to ten feet tall, and the leaves grow large and absorb nutrients from the sun to feed the trees. The tree grows small fruits called camu-camu which grow to the size of lemons but sport a mixture of light oranges, reds, and greens. Though one looks like a mango the size of a lemon, it contains the nutrients of 30 oranges within its flesh.

The camu-camu fruit is one of the greatest fruits to fight sickness. Most people eat copious amounts of oranges when they are sick for the supply of vitamin C, but most are unaware that the camu-camu fruit is a greater source. A camu-camu fruit can contain up to 30 times the amount of vitamin C an orange has, as well as having ten times as much iron, three times as much niacin, twice as much riboflavin, and 50% more phosphorus. Other contained vitamins include beta-carotene, calcium, leucine, protein, serine, thiamin, and valine. The combination of these vitamins can contribute to a healthy nitrogen balance, regular digestions, proper protein synthesis, strong bone growth, and a natural defense against cancer cells. These nutrients are often found in supplements and thus make camu-camu a popular fruit to put into pills and liquid vitamins.

While camu-camu fruits are great for the body, most taste buds find them to be sour and distasteful; however, this isn't a problem if in a tasteless form. People often take it as a powder or a pill to utilize its benefits without tasting it. It also tends to come in mixed juices, putting its benefits with other healthy fruits.

Camu-camu fruits can become part of a person's diet, adding to their health and well being. Its vitamin C ratings are outstanding and the mass of other vitamins contribute to a health, well-functioning body. Remember to use camu-camu fruits, oranges, and other vitamin C fruits within a month of their picked date to avoid the vitamin C percents degrading. In conjunction with other fruits in the juice provided by the juice at gojiberries.us, a small loss of vitamin C won't be a problem.

*Camu-Camu- Contains 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than oranges, and is a powerful antioxidant that helps strengthen the immune system. Camu-camu the name of a fruit that comes from a bush of the same name which grows close to the river banks in the Amazonian rain forest of South America. The camu-camu fruit is approximately 20 milimeters in diameter and has a pruplish red skin with a yellow pulp. When dried, the pulp becomes light beige in color. The small flowers of camu-camu bush have waxy white petals and an exquisite aroma. Traditionally made into a juice by people of the rainforest to help maintain their health, camu-camu has more Vitamin C than any other known botanical. The highest quality camu-camu contains 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than an orange, plus bioflavanoids, and a combination of phytonutrients unique to the camu-camu fruit. Unfortunately, most of the commercially prepared camu-camu has a negligible amount of Vitamin C, which has led to a lack of appreciation of this most potent botanical. It also contains the amino acids, serine, valine, and leucine, as well as small amounts of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. Camu-camu is traditionally used to support the immune system, to ward off viral infections, and to help maintain optimal health, especially under conditions of stress and anxiety, which tend to deplete the immune system. Camu-camu helps to promote healthy gums, eyes, and skin and supports the functions of the brain (nervous system) and heart (circulatory system).
