Having a Goji Berry Midnight Snack

As I sit here in the middle of the night, snacking on some Goji Berries, it occurred to me that some of you may never have tasted them before.

I have read other descriptions of the goji berry comparing them to raisins or “Craisins”. But I really do have to disagree. The similarity is only in the fact that they are all dried berries.

Raisins, both black and golden are naturally very sweet. In fact, at 29 grams of sugar in a ¼ cup of golden raisins, I may as well eat a candy bar! (OK, half a candy bar.. well at least a bite of a candy bar.)

Goji Berries are about half the sugar of raisins. The sugars in raisins are mostly glucose and fructose (simple carbohydrates) whereas the sugar in Goji Berries is a polysaccharide (complex carbohydrate). We add no sugar to the goji berry so it is mildly sweet. It is also slightly tart with a unique aftertaste. They are much firmer than raisins, and so are very satisfying to chew. At less than 100 calories for a ¼ cup, it makes a terrific snack for diabetics and those watching their weight.

Tim
