Confessions of a Health Food Nut

Like many Americans I too get caught up in mass marketing hype.  As it happens oatmeal is my favorite breakfast. I normally use a 1/4 cup rolled oats, a 1/4 oat bran, and 3/4 cup of water, a pinch of salt and a bit of stevia. Pop it in the microwave for a minute and a half and it's breakfast.  Toss in some Goji Berries, blueberries or a sliced apple and it is practially dessert.

So I got a little excited when Quaker came out with their Weight Control Instant Oatmeal. I bought a box. It was indeed tasty and less work on a groggy morning. Then one morning as I was eating, I decided to read the ingredients.

"WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE, MALTODEXTRIN, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SALT, OAT FLOUR, CALCIUM CARBONATE, GUAR GUM, CARAMEL COLOR, SOY LECITHIN, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, SUCRALOSE, NIACINAMIDE*, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, REDUCED IRON, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE*, RIBOFLAVIN*, THIAMIN MONONITRATE*, FOLIC ACID*. *ONE OF THE B VITAMINS CONTAINS MILK AND SOY INGREDIENTS."

Hummm..

Greatfully, my better self broke through and I tossed the rest of the box in the trash.  Now, when I am not so groggy I make up little packets for those sleepy, slow mornings.

Eating Healthy,

Tim
